Soul food is a staple in the black community. Sunday afternoons after church in the kitchen preparing those traditional favorite dishes; a pinch of this and that– all ingredients that have been served for years at plenty of family dinner tables.
Brooklyn chef Lawrence Page, owner of Pink Tea Cup restaurant and reality star of “Hustle & Soul”, dishes on how to prepare those favorite meals adding healthier ingredients without losing the soul.
–Eliminate pork and substitute smoked turkey it’s much more flavorful and less fattening
— Fry chicken using vegetable oil it’s a lot less greasy and you still get the juicy, crunchy texture. Or, olive oil can do the trick.
Mac and Cheese
-America’s favorite! Boil whole wheat noodles, especially if you’re vegan!
–Grab the butternut squash and drizzle on some honey–but not too much!
–Don’t pack on the pounds using butter. Use vegan butter it’s less fattening, very moist and still satisfies the flavor.
