What is wrong with adults? Seriously.
Michael Brown, a 17-year-old black high school student from Houston, TX, applied to 20 universities, and he got accepted into them all….with full rides. They include four Ivy league universities – Harvard, Stanford, Yale and Princeton, and I believe that every adult’s knee-jerk reaction should be “Hooray!”
Brown himself was ecstatic, and a video of his #BlackBoyJoy immediately went viral. I mean, who wouldn’t be delighted at their own hard work paying off?
But for a few “adult” news anchors at Fox DC, they couldn’t help but to unleash some hateration and holleration in that young man’s dancery. Holly Morris (white), Sarah Simmons (white), and Allison Seymour (black) decided to spin the story of this young man’s awesomeness into him “taking” another student’s spot at the other universities he got accepted into. Huh?
In a “Donkey of the Day” segment by Power 105.1’s Charlamagne tha God yesterday, we can hear the three women discussing Brown. Since no video is available, one comment can’t be individually identified.
“Michael Brown is his name. You’re talking Yale, Harvard, Princeton, literally all of them. And he has full rides to all of them. Full rides. So, it has sparked a discussion though of how many schools you should apply to, and it’s a little ridiculous to apply to 20 (emphasis hers), taking away a spot and basically wait-listing another kid,” Morris said.
“Well, I, probably most people won’t agree with me, but I actually think it’s ridiculous to apply to 20 schools. I do. I mean, he could have applied to five. It would have been equally impressive or 10 would have been impressive…admissions officers will say, on average, you should apply to four to eight schools, right?” one anchor said.
“I think it’s a little obnoxious because you can only go to one. You can only take one full ride, and you are taking a spot from someone else who worked really hard,” Morris said.
And again, these are adults? They sound more like bitter Bettys to me. Because Morris had the most to say, Black Twitter came at her accordingly, letting her know that her comments were not only out of line, they were racist. So, she responded.
I don’t know about you, but I call complete b-s on that. Other Twitter users chimed in calling the anchors’ comments “disgusting,” and “ignorant,” one even demanding that Morris apologize to Brown.
And let’s not forget about Allison Seymour, who should have immediately shut Morrison down but didn’t. As a black woman with black children, it’s disturbing that she either commented negatively about Brown (the audio isn’t clear about who made that one comment) or that she was completely silent. It goes to show you that sometimes your people aren’t your people. I sincerely hope that her children are inspired by Brown, instead of sharing their mother’s sentiment.
Although these anchors got the angle of the story completely wrong, here is one by USA Today that got it right.
